IIU Launches Investigation into Arrest of Man in Mosakahiken Cree Nation

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrest of an adult male on January 31st in Mosakahiken Cree Nation.

On February 3rd, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) notified the IIU about a complaint received from a concerned citizen. The complaint involved a video posted online that depicted a segment of the man’s arrest on Trader’s Road in Moose Lake.

The video reportedly shows two officers using force in an attempt to gain control of the man. According to the RCMP, the male had previously barricaded himself inside a residence, refused to comply with officers’ directions, actively resisted arrest, and tried to assault the officers.

In response to the notification, the acting civilian director of the IIU determined that it is in the public interest to investigate the incident further.

The IIU is appealing to witnesses or individuals with information or additional video footage that could aid the investigation to come forward. They can contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
