Serious injury to suspect during arrest prompts IIU Investigation.

Manitoba’s Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding a serious injury that happened during the arrest of a 39-year-old male.

According to the IIU members of the Winnipeg Police Service were called to an incident on Ellice Avenue around 5:44 am on December 19, 2019.

When they arrived on scene they determined the male should be taken to hospital for treatment. As the man was being taken to Health Sciences Centre he became belligerent and began to struggle with police. Officers used force to place the male under arrest.

During the arrest, the male suffered a fractured orbital socket he was taken to HSC and admitted for observation while being treated.

The IIU investigates all injuries involving police requiring admission to hospital.
