IIU investigating after a male in custody admitted to hospital

Manitoba’s police watchdog, the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating an arrest by Winnipeg Police after a man they arrested was admitted to hospital with a collapsed lung.

It happened on the morning of Wednesday, August 8, 2018. Police officers were called to Siloam Mission about an agitated male. As officers tried to place the man under arrest he resisted. Pepper spray was used and one of the officers fired a taser in an effort to control the suspect and take him into custody.

According to the IIU, the man was taken to Health Sciences Centre and it was determined by medical staff that he had a collapsed lung.

The IIU is mandated to investigate because the suspect was diagnosed with internal injuries that required him to be admitted to hospital.
