Thompson RCMP officer charged over November 2015 incident
After a lengthy investigation by the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) Constable Abram Letkeman of the Thompson detachment of the RCMP has been charged with manslaughter for his alleged involvement in an incident from November 2015.
It happened on November 21, 2015 after the officer was involved in an on-duty shooting. Letkeman had been involved in a pursuit and traffic stop during which he discharged his firearm killing the male driver and seriously injuring the female passenger according to the IIU.
IIU Civilian Director Zane Tessler, in consultation with Manitoba Prosecutions Service, has determined there are reasonable grounds to believe criminal offences occurred.
Letkeman was arrested on March 1, 2017 and has been charged with
- one count of manslaughter;
- one count of criminal negligence causing death;
- one count of reckless discharge of a firearm;
- one count of criminal negligence causing bodily harm;
- one count of dangerous driving causing bodily harm;
- one count of dangerous driving
He was released on bail and will appear in Thompson court on March 31, 2017.
