The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has cleared the officers involved in the September 21, 2020 arrest of a male who was injured while being taken into custody.
The IIU say that police conducted a traffic stop at about 11:06 pm the driver took off and a pursuit ensued. The vehicle came to a stop near Assiniboine Avenue and Kennedy Street. The driver ran from officers and officers gave chase on foot. A taser was used causing the suspect to fall face first onto the gravel river walkway.
The suspect was taken to hospital where he received treatment for a broken wrist and possible broken ribs.
As the injures are considered serious the IIU was mandated to investigate.
After conducting an extensive investigation that included reviewing reports, cell phone video, radio transmissions and talking to the suspect, witness officers and firefighters the file was referred to Manitoba Prosecution Services (MPS) for an opinion.
MPS did not recommend any criminal charges against the officers involved.
