The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating two separate incidents involving Winnipeg police.
Incident one
On September 2, 2023, officers had responded to the report of male walking into traffic near Main Street and Alexander Avenue. The male was placed in handcuffs but believing the male was having a medical emergency officers called paramedics. Once in the ambulance the male’s condition turned critical while he was being transported to Health Sciences Centre. The male was pronounced dead.
The IIU assumed the investigation as the male was in police custody when the medical incident occurred.
Incident two
On September 3, 2023, Winnipeg Police were called to a home after a female who had broken into the residence began assaulting people. When officers arrived the female became combative with them and a use of force encounter occurred that resulted in a serious injury. Medical staff at Concordia Hospital determined that the female suffered a broken right tibia.
As a fractured tibia is considered a serious injury under the IIU’s mandate they are investigating.
