IIU INVESTIGATING TWO SEPARATE ASSAULT ALLEGATIONS AGAINST POLICE

Manitoba’s police watchdog agency, the Independent Investigations Unit (IIU), is looking into two separate cases involving assault allegations.

The first case involves a complaint about an incident that occurred in the Manitou area. On April 21, 2017 RCMP had responded to a vehicle accident. A female involved in the collision states that she was assaulted by an on-duty RCMP officer while she was being arrested for impaired driving.

The woman was not seriously hurt but Zane Tessler, the civilian director of the IIU has determined that it is in the public interest for the unit to take over the investigation into the incident.

The other case involves a man who says that he was assaulted by a Winnipeg Police officer after being arrested on May 17, 2017 in an interview room when he was at police headquarters on Smith Street. The man say that after he was released he went to St. Boniface Hospital to be examined.

The IIU is assuming control of this investigation even though the alleged injuries do not meet the definition of “serious injury” as defined in the regulations because the civilian director believes it would be in the public interest.

The IIU investigates all serious incidents involving police officers in Manitoba, whether occurring on or off duty.
