IIU investigating two cases where suspects suffered broken ribs

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is looking into two cases involving suspects who sustained serious injuries.

On July 9, 2021, a male was placed under arrest for being in contravention of a release order. When RCMP attempted to place the male into a police cruiser he resisted and refused to get in. He eventually was placed in the vehicle and taken to the detachment.

While at the detachment the man complained that he was having trouble breathing. He was taken to hospital in Portage La Prairie and examined. He was returned to the hospital the next day for X-rays which indicated the male had a collapsed lung and multiple fractured ribs.

In an unrelated incident on July 10 a male had been arrested by RCMP in relation to a domestic assault. While officers were processing his release the male told officers he needed medical attention. An ambulance transported the male to hospital where it was determined he had a broken rib.

As a broken rib is considered a serious injury the IIU is mandated to investigate both these incidents.
