Manitoba’s police watchdog agency, the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the death of an adult male while he was in police custody on Sunday, October 15, 2023.
According to Winnipeg Polic Service, officers had responded to the report of a male in distress running into traffic and acting erratically around 10:50 pm.
When officers arrived they took the man into custody but he soon went into medical distress. Video from the scene showed officers struggling with the male while he was being taken into custody. The male was taken to hospital in critical condition but was later pronounced dead.
The incident happened in the area of Sherbrook Street and Broadway.
The IIU was notified of the incident and immediately began a mandatory investigation as required by the Police Services Act.
