The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has taken over responsibility for the investigation into the death of male in the RM of Prairie Lakes on July 22, 2022.
Just before 10:00 pm RCMP had gone to a home to execute an arrest warrant. When officers arrived they found the suspect in the yard of the home, The male then went into the residence and came back out with a firearm which he then shot at police with. Officers fired back and the male went back inside the residence and barricaded himself inside.
Shortly afterwards officers noticed smoke coming from the home before flames engulfed the structure. At 7:00 am on July 23 a body was removed from the building.
The IIU is mandated to investigate as this case involves a fatality in the presence of police. A civilian monitor has been requested from the Manitoba Police Commission.
