The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has launched an investigation into serious injuries allegedly sustained by an adult male during an arrest by the Brandon Police Service (BPS) on January 9th.
According to a notification received by the IIU on February 20th, the incident occurred at approximately 1:13 p.m. at a residence in the 1400 block of Applewood Bay in Brandon. BPS officers were executing an order under the Mental Health Act when they encountered the male, who was holding two large objects, as they approached the door.
Police advised the man he was being taken into custody, at which point he retreated into the residence. A confrontation ensued in the living room, resulting in a use-of-force encounter. Officers handcuffed the man and placed him in a police cruiser.
While in the cruiser, the man complained of severe pain in his ribs, stating he believed they were broken. He was subsequently transported to Brandon Regional Health Centre for X-rays and then returned to police custody.
The IIU is mandated to investigate the incident as it involved serious injuries, as defined under the IIU regulation.
