The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision of a vehicle after an attempted traffic stop by Winnipeg Police on April 9, 2022.
As News 4 reported on Sunday, police had tried to stop a vehicle on Selkirk Avenue at McKenzie Street after an officer noticed that the vehicle had expired insurance. The driver refused to stop and fled at a high rate of speed losing control of the vehicle after hitting a curb. The car flipped onto its roof and collided with a building.
Police arrived on the scene seconds later. The 27-year-old driver of the vehicle suffered significant injuries and was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Under regulations the IIU is mandated to investigate all incidents that involve police and a fatality.
