IIU investigating officer-involved shooting in Winnipeg

Manitoba’s police watchdog agency, The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU), is conducting an investigation into a police-involved shooting that happened around 2:12 am on Saturday, August 27, 2022, in the Windsor Park area of Winnipeg.

According to the IIU, officers were conducting a traffic checkstop near Portage Avenue and Empress Street. The driver of a 2021 Camero SS failed to slow or stop at the checkstop and continued westbound on Portage Avenue before turning south on Kenaston Boulevard (Route 90). Air 1 was able to locate the vehicle near Bishop Grandin Boulevard. Two Winnipeg Police Service officers arrived at the home of the registered owner of the vehicle as it pulled into the rear of the home. The male driver retrieved a weapon and headed toward the officers on foot. Both officers fired their service weapons, hitting the suspect several times. Officers provided immediate medical attention and the man was taken to hospital where he died from his injuries.

Under the regulations that govern the IIU they are mandated to investigate any injury caused by the discharge of a firearm by a police officer.

Anyone with information or video footage that can help investigators is asked to call 1-844-667-6060.
