The circumstances surrounding the death of a man while in the custody of Winnipeg police are being investigated by the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU).
According to the IIU the incident took place on Sunday February 12, 2017 a at home in the Garden City area of Winnipeg. Officers had gone to the home after a male resident said he wanted a man removed from his residence. When police arrived a struggled with the male happened and police took him into custody.
There are no details being released by the IIU except that Winnipeg paramedics were called and the male was taken to Seven Oaks Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Under the Police Services Act the IIU is mandated to investigate because police were involved in an incident that caused serious injury or death. Also as part of procedure a civilian monitor request has been made to the Manitoba Police Commission.
