IIU investigating injuries caused to fleeing suspect

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding injuries caused during the arrest of a 25-year-old male on Monday, September 21, 2020.

According to the IIU Winnipeg Police had conducted a traffic stop when the driver of the vehicle fled the scene. Officers pursued the vehicle until the chase ended at Assiniboine Avenue and Kenney Street just after 11:00 pm.

The driver then fled the vehicle on foot. He ran towards the Assiniboine River as police pursued on foot. Officers deployed a taser causing the suspect to fall face forward onto the gravel river walk.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to Health Sciences Centre where he was treated for a broken wrist and possible broken rib.

The IIU was told of the incident by Winnipeg Police On Tuesday, September 22 and under their mandate must investigate the incident due to the injuries involved.
