Another death in custody has happened at the Provincial Remand Centre in Winnipeg.
It happened on August 13, 2017, after the inmate had been taken to hospital two days earlier.
The deceased had entered the justice system on August 9, 2017. During the course of his arrest, Winnipeg Police officers used force to get the man into custody and process him. The suspect complained of sore ribs and was taken to hospital where he was medically cleared. He was then taken to the Winnipeg Remand Centre (WRC).
On August 11 the WRC says he was taken to the hospital. He was reported dead to the Winnipeg Police Service on August 13, 2017.
As is required the WPS contacted the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) on August 16, 2017, and told them of the incident.
The IIU immediately assumed control of the investigation and because the investigation is concerning a fatality they have requested a civilian monitor from the Manitoba Police Commission.
In the fall of 2016, three inmates died while in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre between the beginning of September and the end of October.
