The independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating the in-custody death of a 27-year-old male following his arrest by Winnipeg Police.
On September 23, 2019, around 12:40 am officers were called to the area around Assiniboine Avenue and Kennedy Street for a repot of a male acting confused and yelling.
When officers arrived they located the man on the banks of the Assiniboine River. The male confronted officers and they were forced to use force to take the male into custody.
Once in custody the male became unresponsive and was rushed to St. Boniface Hospital in critical condition. Although the male’s condition improved he died a week later on September 3o, 2019.
The IIU was informed of the death and immediately began an investigation.
