Manitoba’s Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is looking into an injury caused by the use of non-lethal ammunition during an armed and barricaded incident around 12:25 p.m. on February 26, 2024.
According to Winnipeg Police Service (WPS), officers went to a home on Worthington Avenue looking for a man wanted on multiple warrants.
When police identified themselves at the door to the residence the male refused to come to the door. The want man fired a gun at officers but no one was injured.
The Tactical Support Team along with the Drone Unit were called in and a nearby school was placed on hold and secure as a safety precaution.
Around 2:30 p.m. smoke and flames were seen coming from the west side of the residence. Firefighters were notified as officers continued attempts to have the man leave the home.
Shortly after the fire started the 44-year-old man left the building but disregarded commands from police. Members of the Tactical Support Team attempted to de-escalate the situation, according to police, but were unsuccessful. A less-lethal round (Bean Bag) was fired in an effort to incapacitate the man. The suspect was taken into custody and taken to hospital for minor injuries and smoke inhalation.
Medical staff confirmed the male suffered bruising to his torso and smoke inhalation.
Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews entered the structure and were quickly able to get the fire under control by 3:08 p.m.
As the injuries to the suspect were caused by the use of a firearm the IIU is mandated to ingvestigate the incident.
