IIU investigating alleged injury to youth during arrest

Manitoba’s police watchdog agency is investigating after Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) notified them of an injury to a male youth during an arrest.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) says that on October 12, 2023, WPS officers were on patrol in the 300 block of Magnus Avenue when they spotted two male youths who they believed had a weapon. As the officers got out of their patrol unit the youth fled. Once police caught the pair of suspects and were placing them under arrest one of the youth tried to flee a second time. As officers tried to stop him he suffered a broken leg. The youth was taken to hospital and medical staff confirmed the youth had a broken tibia and fibula.

As a broken bone is defined as a serious injury the IIU is mandated to investigate the incident.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has video footage that can help investigators is asked to call 1-844-667-6060.
