The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating after a female died while in RCMP custody in Chemawawin on March 23. 2023.
According to the IIU, “an intoxicated female was taken into custody on March 22 around 7:40 p.m. She was transported to the Chemawawin RCMP detachment and lodged in cells. On March 23 around 10 a.m., the female was found unresponsive in a cell. CPR was started immediately. Nurses from the community’s nursing station attended and pronounced the female deceased.”
A civilian monitor has been requested from the Manitoba Police Commission as the matter involves a fatality.
