IIU investigating after suspect’s wrist allegedly fractured during arrest

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating after the wrist of a 48-year-old female was allegedly fractured during her arrest by RCMP.

On June 11, 2020, RCMP in Portage la Prairie responded to a call for help a a residence. When they arrived they encountered a female who was combative and threatened officers. As officers tried to arrest her she continued to be uncoperative. Force was used and officers were able to take her into custody.

On June 15 the female returned to the detachment and told them that she had received medical treatment for a fractured wrist the day before.

Under regulations that govern the IIU a fractured wrist is considered a serious injury and they are mandated to investigate the incident.
