The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating after a male youth was hurt during a police pursuit.
On July 18, 2021, officers from the Manitoba First Nations Police Service noticed a speeding vehicle on Kickemaskanow in Opaskwayak Cree Nation. Police activated their emergency lights and tried to initiate a traffic stop but the vehicle was quickly out of sight due to its speed. Officers found the vehicle further down the road after it had crashed into a house near Amisk Crescent.
The male youth driver was still in the vehicle as police arrived. The suspect had blood on his face and was complaining of a sore arm. He was taken to hospital in The Pas where it was determined he had a broken arm. He was later transferred to Winnipeg for treatment.
As a broken arm is defined as a serious injury the IIU is mandated to investigate the incident.
