The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is looking into the circumstances surrounding serious injuries to a suspect and a Winnipeg Police Service officer.
on Saturday, May 15, 2021, WPS officers were trying to arrest a male who was a passenger in a stopped taxi when the suspect fled on foot. Officers pursued the suspect on foot when a short time later the suspect and the two officers were hit by a Winnipeg police patrol unit being driven by another officer.
One of the officers suffered a broken pelvis while the suspect was treated in hospital for internal injuries and lacerations.
As broken bones and internal injuries are considered serious injuries the IIU is mandated to investigate.
