IIU investigating after male injured during arrest in Brandon

A 28-year-old male suspect was shot by Brandon Police with a “less lethal” firearm causing an injury to his back.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating the January 20, 2020 incident due to the injury to the male was caused by a police firearm.

According to the IIU officers with the Brandon Police Service responded to a call around 11:00 pm. When they arrived the male suspect threatened them with a knife.

Officers tried to get the male to drop the weapon but were unsuccessful. As the suspect began to flee he threw the knife towards an officer behind a vehicle.

At this point, an officer fired a “less lethal’ firearm at the fleeing suspect hitting him in the back causing a contusion.

The male was arrested and taken to Brandon Regional Health Centre where he was treated and released.
