IIU investigating after a man was allegedly injured during Brandon arrest

Manitoba’s police watchdog agency, the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU), is looking into an arrest by Brandon Police Service officers that allegedly resulted in the suspect being injured in the process.

According to the IIU, on May 3, 2023, officers responded to an incident where a person had locked themselves inside a storage room and refused to leave. As officers arrived on the scene they saw a man exiting he storage room armed with a crowbar and a knife. Officers struggled with the suspect briefly during his arrest. When the accused was brought to the cells he complained that an officer had assaulted him during the arrest.

The IIU civilian director has determined that it is in the public interest to investigate the incident.
