IIU investigating after a 23-year-old suspect injured

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating an injury related to the arrest of a 23-year-old male on September 1, 2020.

According to the IIU, RCMP were pursuing a stolen vehicle in connection to a rural break-in where firearms were stolen. They notified the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) that the vehicle had entered the city.

WPS officers located the vehicle at Lagimodiere Boulevard and Dugald Road and began a pursuit. Shortly afterwards the suspect vehicle drove into the ditch at Lagimodiere and Grassie Boulevard. Two suspects ran from the vehicle.

One of the suspects was quickly captured after a brief foot pursuit while the other was taken into custody on Mahonee Drive. Police say that at the time of the arrest the second suspect had a laceration on his ear. He was taken to hospital for the laceration but while being treated it was discovered the suspect was also suffering from a collapsed lung.

Since the collapsed lung required hospitalization it is considered a serious injury and the IIU is mandated to investigate.

Anyone with information or video of the incident that can help investigators is asked to call 1-844-667-6060.
