IIU investigating a police-involved shooting

Manitoba’s police watchdog agency, The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) confirmed on Monday, June 20, 2022, that they are investigating a fatal shooting involving a Winnipeg Police Service officer of Friday, June 17.

The IIU says that around 4:14 pm an officer had just completed a traffic stop at the intersection of Salter Street and Mountain Avenue and was sitting in his vehicle when a male with a knife approached the driver side door in an aggressive manner. A confrontation between the officer and the suspect resulted in the male being shot. The suspect was taken to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

IIU investigators were deployed to the scene and the investigation began.

The IIU has requested a civilian monitor from he Manitoba Police Commission as this case involves a fatality.
