The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating after a male died while in custody of the the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS).
The IIU says they were notified of the death on Saturday, July 9, 2022. Earlier that day a male was arrested and detained under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act and lodged at the Long Plains MFNPS detachment. About an hour after he had been placed in a cell he was found unresponsive. He was taken to hospital where he later died.
The IIU is mandated to investigate as this case involves a fatality. A civilian monitor from the Manitoba Police Commission has been requested.
