The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating after a male died in Sandy Bay while Manitoba First Nations Police Service officers were present.
According to the IIU, On August 4, 2021, officers had responded to a report of a male with a firearm was lighting grass fires near Lake Road North in Sandy Bay First Nation. The officers located the male and while they were on scene the male shot himself with a gun. Police initiated emergency first aid while waiting for paramedics but the male side at the scene.
The IIU was notified of the death and immediately assumed responsibility for the investigation. A civilian monitor from the Manitoba Police Commission has been requested.
