IIU Investigates Manitoba First Nations Police Service Incident Involving Armed Male

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is examining an incident involving the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS), which resulted in serious injury to an adult male.

According to a notification received by the IIU, the incident occurred early in the morning at around 6 a.m. on January 9. MFNPS officers were attempting to stop a vehicle involved in a prior incident when it slid into a ditch. The male driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

A K9 unit later tracked the individual to a nearby house trailer, where he was found hiding. Upon confronting the officers, the male threatened them with a weapon and subsequently lunged at them while holding an object. The K9 dog was deployed and bit the male, leading to his capture.

Emergency medical services promptly transported the injured male to Portage District General Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Given the serious nature of the male’s injuries and his subsequent hospital admission, the IIU is mandated to investigate the incident. They are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information or video footage to come forward by contacting them toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
