IIU investigates injury to suspect during arrest by Winnipeg Police

On Sunday, December 17, 2017, the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) was notified of an injury that happened to a 25-year-old male suspect while he was being arrested.

According to a notice to the IIU from Winnipeg Police, officers were arresting the suspect in a break and enter on Arthur Street in the Exchange District. The suspect resisted and officers were forced to subdue him in order to take him into custody.

The suspect was taken to the hospital and treated for a broken jaw and other fractures.

Under the IIU mandate, all serious injuries that involve on or off-duty police officers have to be investigated. The injuries sustained by the suspect are considered serious.
