The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the death of an adult female following an arrest by Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Vogar, Manitoba.
On January 15th at approximately 8 p.m., RCMP officers were dispatched to a residence in Vogar in response to a 911 hang-up call. Upon arrival, officers encountered a female who was under the influence of drugs and allegedly attempted to use a weapon on someone in the residence. The female was then placed under arrest.
During the transport to Lakeshore General Hospital in Ashern for a medical assessment, the female became unresponsive. The officers immediately pulled over, requested emergency medical services, and provided emergency care. The female was taken by ambulance to Lakeshore General Hospital and subsequently transported to St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg. Sadly on January 16th, authorities were informed that the female had passed away in hospital.
Following standard procedure in incidents involving fatalities, the IIU has taken over the investigation in accordance with Section 65(4) of the Police Services Act. Moreover, the IIU has requested a civilian monitor from the Manitoba Police Commission to oversee the investigation, ensuring transparency and accountability.
