Brandon Police Service reported an incident to the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) that happened January 11, 2017.
According to the IIU Brandon police received a report that a dead man was located in a Brandon hotel room. Police advised the IIU that they had had contact with the deceased the night before after receiving a call for service.
The IIU has taken over the investigation to determine if the earlier contact with police and the deceased had any connection to the death. Since there is a fatality involved the IIU has asked the Manitoba Police Commission to provide a civilian monitor.
The IIU investigates all serious incidents involving police officers in Manitoba, whether occurring on or off duty.
