IIU investigate injury to youth during arrest by Winnipeg police

An injury to a youth during an arrest by Winnipeg police officers has prompted an investigation by the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU)

On September 2, 2017, just after midnight police were investigating a stolen vehicle report. As police located the vehicle a person fled and a foot pursuit ensued. An officer was able to catch up with the suspect and push them to the ground. The suspect a 14 year old female complained of a sore shoulder shortly after the arrest and was taken to Children’s Hospital. Doctors treated the girl for a fractured left clavicle and she was released from the hospital.

According to the IIU, they are investigating because it is in the public’s interest for them to do so even though the suspect did not suffer a serious injury.

The IIU investigates all serious incidents involving police officers in Manitoba, whether occurring on or off duty.
