The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the arrest and serious injury of a suspect on July 13, 2016, in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg Police Service advised the IIU that on that date, at approximately 5 am, officers were dispatched to a house on Ross Avenue after a call from the homeowner about a person smashing planters outside the home. When police arrived, they found the suspect had forcibly gained entry to the house. Officers found the suspect hiding in a closet and attempted to place him under arrest. The suspect resisted and police used a taser to gain control of him.
Police immediately transported him to hospital, where it was discovered he had internal injuries.
As internal injuries requiring hospitalization are defined in regulations as a serious injury, the IIU is required to investigate.
