IIU | DOPS OFFICERS CLEARED OF WRONGDOING

Dakota Ojibway Police Services (DOPS) officers cleared of any wrongdoing in injury to prisoner says Manitoba’s Independent Investigation Unit (IIU)

DOPS arrested a suspect on the Sandy Bay First Nation on April 2, 2016. The suspect was taken to the DOPS detachment in Sandy Bay then transferred to the RCMP cells in Portage La Prairie.

After the suspect had been transferred to the RCMP cells he alleged he sustained injures. He was taken to hospital on April 4, 2016 and was treated.

The IIU investigated, reviewed reports and closed circuit video from both the DOPS and RCMP.

After reviewing the files and video, the IIU civilian director concluded the affected person’s injuries resulted from both a pre-existing medical condition and self-inflicted actions. Zane Tessler wrote there is no evidence any officer contributed in any way to the suspect’s injuries, nor denied him necessary treatment for those injuries.
