The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has concluded an investigation into the self-inflicted shooting death of a male in Sandy Bay First Nation on August 4, 2021.
On that day Manitoba First Nations Police Service officers responded to the report of an adult male with a firearm lighting grass fires around Lake Road North in the community. After officers located the man and while they were on the scene the male shot himself. Officers provided emergency first aid until paramedics arrived. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
As the incident involved a fatality in police presence the IIU was mandated to investigate.
After a thorough investigation the civilian director of the IIU concluded that “there is nothing to support a finding that there was any level of contribution by the police officers to cause the affected person’s death by either action or inaction and therefore there are no grounds to justify the designation of any police officers as subject officers.”
