No charges will be laid against a Winnipeg Police officer after a suspect was injured during an arrest.
On October 24, 2018, police were chasing after a suspect as he tried to run from officers. One officer followed the male suspect on foot while the other stayed in the vehicle and attempted to intercept him. The suspect collided with the vehicle as he ran from officers and suffered a fractured pelvis.
The Independent Investigation Unit was called in to investigate due to the severity of the man’s injuries.
IIU investigators learned that the officer driving the police cruiser was travelling at low speeds as she searched for the suspect but the suspect was focused on getting away from the officer on foot when he ran into the vehicle.
The IIU has determined that the collision was unavoidable and there was no evidence to suggest the driver had intended to cause the man any harm.
