IIU clears RCMP officer of any wrongdoing for discharging his firearm

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) says that the officer who discharged his firearm into the air during an arrest attempt will not face any charges.

On June 1, 2019 two officer responded to a family disturbance on a farm near Roblin, Manitoba. Police tried to arrest a male who is a known Meth user and had been reported to be high or intoxicated.

The suspect ran from the officers and made his way to a tractor. The male starter the machine and began to drive to towards one of the officers.

The officer fired two warning shots into the air in an effort to avoid injury and get the suspect to stop the farm equipment.

Ignoring the officers order the suspect dove over to an ATV an then made his escape on the ATV.

The IIU says the no one was injured during the incident.

After an investigation and in consultation with Manitoba Prosecution Services it was determined that  based on the exigent circumstances, the subject officer’s response met a standard of care that would have been employed by a reasonable person in the same situation.

No charges were recommended.
