IIU CLEARS RCMP IN ANOLA STAND-OFF / SUICIDE

RCMP acted appropriately

Manitoba’s police watchdog has cleared the RCMP of any wrongdoing in relation to a stand-off and death that began on January 6, 2017 near Anola.

The stand-off with police happened after the man  sent dozens of threatening text messages to his estranged wife. The messages also threatened any police officer who came for him.

RCMP set up containment around the man’s home and brought in a crisis negotiation team.

Negotiations with the suspect happened throughout the night but they were unable to get the man to surrender. At 8:00 am January 7, 2017 police entered the home and found the man dead in a bedroom closet from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba investigated the incident and have determined that there is no evidence that any of the RCMP subject officers did or failed to do anything that caused or contributed to the death of the man.

IIU Civilian Director Zane Tessler determined RCMP officers responded appropriately and did everything possible to de-escalate the matter and negotiate a peaceful surrender, and that the man was intent on taking his own life.
