IIU clears officers who arrested injured car thief

Police officers involved in the arrest of a car thief injured on February 18, 2020, have been cleared of wrongdoing following an in-depth investigation by the police watchdog agency.

The WPS spotted a stolen vehicle being driven on McPhillips Street, and when its driver tried to evade police, the stolen vehicle collided with a taxi near McPhillips Street and Jarvis Avenue.

The suspect was removed from the vehicle, handcuffed and taken to hospital where he was treated for a dislocated elbow and bruising.

Six months later, the Law Enforcement Review Agency let the WPS know that a complaint they had received turned up medical evidence the man also suffered fractures to two bones in his leg in the incident.

The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is required to investigate when a citizen suffers a serious injury during an arrest, such as broken bones.

IIU investigators interviewed the people involved in the incident; reviewed the medical, use of force and arrest processing reports; looked at video from Air1 and the McPhillips Street Station casino; and listen to the police radio calls.

The investigation led to the conclusion the evidence does not support any kind of charges against the officers, and the IIU has closed their file.
