The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has concluded its investigation into an incident involving a use-of-force encounter by a Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) officer in Birdtail Sioux First Nation. The incident, which occurred on November 22, 2023, resulted in facial injuries to an adult male.
MFNPS notified the IIU of the incident on November 24, 2023. According to the initial notification, officers responded to a disturbance call at 7:42 p.m. Upon arrival, they encountered an aggressive male, leading to a use-of-force situation. The injured man was subsequently transported to Virden Health Centre for medical treatment.
The IIU, mandated to investigate incidents of this nature under the Police Services Act, assumed responsibility for the investigation. Investigators interviewed the affected individual, one civilian witness, the subject officer, and two witness officers.
After a thorough review of all evidence and circumstances, the civilian director of the IIU determined that the actions of the subject officer were reasonable. As a result, no charges will be recommended.
The IIU investigation is now complete, and the case is closed.
