IIU takes over investigation of alleged assault by off-duty cop

A man who was arrested in March 2017 has complained to police in mid-April 2018, that the arresting officer, an off-duty Winnipeg Police Service member, punched and kneed him during the arrest.

The man was subsequently released without charges and sought medical attention for his injuries.

The 32-year-old male may have sustained permanent hearing loss due to the altercation during his arrest.

Manitoba’s police watchdog the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) has taken over the investigation into the man’s complaint because the injury allegedly sustained is considered serious in nature. Under the regulations, the IIU is mandated to investigate this kind of incident.
