The RCMP has handed over the investigation into the assault and sexual abuse allegations brought forward during the Manitoba Clean Environment Commission (CEC) hearings earlier this year to two outside agencies. During the hearing members of the Fox Lake Cree Nation told of abuse by Manitoba Hydro employees and contractors along with members of the RCMP in the Gillam area dating back to the 1960’s.
The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba will be conducting an investigation into the allegations specifically brought against members of the RCMP while the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will be investigating the allegations brought against hydro employees and contractors.

The scope of the investigation will be determined by the IIU and the OPP. The RCMP will refer any news reports that relate to the investigation to the respective outside agencies.
The RCMP made the decision to refer the case to the outside agencies after reviewing the CEC report from May 2018 entitled “A Review of the Regional Cumulative Effects Assessment” as well as the transcript from a community meeting that was held with members of the Fox Lake Cree Nation on January 19, 2018.
