The annual ice-jam mitigation projet is set to begin this weekend on the Red River north of Selkirk.
The program uses a number of remote-controlled ice cutting units and three Amphibex icebreakers to cut a 100 metre wide swath between Selkirk and Netley Marsh.
“The yearly ice-jam mitigation is part of the province’s strategic flood control operations to protect Manitobans and reduce potential damages that may result from an ice-jam event,” said Infrastructure Minister Doyle Piwniuk. “We urge Manitobans to use caution on the ice, watch for notices and keep safe distances from all ice-cutting and equipment.”
The province say that notices have been posted in the area of the ice-cutting operation and people are advised to stay off the ice in these areas.
