Following recent precipitation in the United States first responders are urging caution around waterways as ice conditions are considered dangerous.
On Thursday, January 4, 2024, Manitoba Hydrologic Forecast Centre issued an advisory that water levels at Emerson on the Red River have increased by about five feet. Over the next several day the crest will move northward into Winnipeg brining an increase of three to five feet to the river.
The rising water may lift up ice on the river and create open water conditions near the shorelines.
First responder believe that the rise in water levels will likely cause hanging ice along the edges of the river.
Tom Wallace, Deputy Chief with the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said ““Falling into ice-cold water can be deadly, so we need residents to be cautious around waterways. Ice surfaces on rivers, streams, retention ponds, and even ditches can be deceiving, especially when covered in snow. Banks around waterways can be slippery and unstable.”
WFPS says that if you spot someone who has fallen through the ice call 911 immediately and try to keep track of where they are. Under no circumstances should you go after them. Wait for first responders who have the equipment and training for this type of rescue.
