Hydro staff able to vote near temporary job locations

On Monday, October 21, 2019, Canadians take to the polls to cast their votes in the federal election.

Although thousands of Canadians were also able to take advantage of advanced polling Manitoba Hydro staff working to restore power from last weeks devastating snowstorm were unable to.

Elections Canada has devised a plan that will allow hydro employees based in the field to cast their ballots at polling stations near where they are working.

“This is great news for all involved. Working with Elections Canada in Ottawa, we have been able to develop a plan to ensure our staff can vote while staying in the areas they are working in,” said Jay Grewal, President and CEO of Manitoba Hydro. “We had always intended that our staff would get time off in order to participate in their election process, but this development saves hours of travel time allowing our hardworking field employees to both vote and continue to work to restoring service to our customers with a minimum of disruption.”

Normally if you are unable to vote on election day in your home riding voters must use advanced polls or get special ballots from Elections Canada.

Hydro says that although the majority of Manitobans have power there are still just under 5,000 customers in Ashern, Arborg, Portage la Prairie and Dauphin without electricity.
