Hydro sets single-day record with 17 pole fires reported

Manitoba Hydro deals with pole fires on a regular basis but on Thursday the crown corporation set a record with 17 in a single day.

Pole fires can be caused by a number of issues including short circuits which is what happened in River Heights around 11:30 pm Thursday night.

Two pole fires, a block apart, forced firefighters to close Academy Road and Kingsway in both directions between Renfrew Street and Lindsey Street.

Hydro workers spent about two-and-a-half hours repairing the damage.

“The extremely dry conditions up until yesterday have meant we are seeing a greater concentration of pole fires over a shorter period of time,” Manitoba Hydro said in a post to social media.
