HYDRO OFFERS VOLUNTARY DEPARTURE PROGAM TO REDUCE WORKFORCE

Employees have six week window to apply for program

Manitoba Hydro announced earlier this year that a significant reduction in their workforce was needed.

30% of the vice-president positions have already been eliminated and a review on restructuring of senior management has been completed with a 15% reduction in positions.

Hydro previously announced that it would be reducing it’s workforce by 900 positions and look at other ways to improve its financial performance. A review by the Manitoba Hydro-Electric Board identified the need to address the serious deterioration in the corporation’s financial health.

Most of Hydro’s employees will be eligible to apply for the voluntary departure program which begins on Monday April 10, 2017 and runs for six weeks.

“The voluntary departure program is the preferred first step to achieving our target workforce reduction,” said Kelvin Shepherd, Manitoba Hydro’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “It’s fair to our employees, providing a financial incentive to those who choose to voluntarily leave the company.”

Hydro also says that as part of their plan to improve their bottom line they intend on asking the Public Utilities Board for a rate increase in May of this year. They are taking the position that they need the revenue increase to address the financial challenges facing the corporation.
