Hydro and Keeyask Cree Nations strike deal to end blockades

Manitoba Hydro and the four Keeyask Cree Nations (KCN) have come to an agreement that will see the current injunction against KCN and the blockades stopping access to Keeyask Generating Station removed.

Over the weekend the chiefs of KCN and Manitoba Hydro president and CEO Jay Grewal came to the understanding a via conference call that saw both sides commit to broader collaboration in the future.

“I’m happy we were able to have an open and frank discussion with our partners,” Grewal said. “We gained a better understanding of their perspectives and concerns regarding the shift change for the Keeyask project and its pandemic plan.”

The plan will see a number on initiatives including a COVID-19 planning exercise with the communities, a face-to-face leadership meeting, and the resumption of the shift change.

The approximate 1000 workers who will return to the construction site over the next few weeks will all have to pass a COVID-19 test before being allowed to start work.
